Fostering Resilience in the Midst of Challenging Work

As managers of volunteers, we see and hear stories of hope, friendship, trauma, injustice, success, challenge, and more on a regular basis. How do we ensure that we care for ourselves while walking alongside others so that we can continue to lead with intention, compassion, and professionalism?

Working in high stress, trauma exposed, and emotionally demanding professions carries elements of risk to the provider: vicarious trauma, moral distress, and burnout can take a cumulative toll on us as individuals and as teams.

Through this talk we will learn about how we can:

  • identify the various impacts of working in high stress, trauma exposed environments
  • recognize warning signs
  • learn some strategies to help reset and replenish throughout the flow of the workday

About the Speaker

Diana’s current work focuses on supporting staff, team, leaders and organizations that do high stress, trauma exposed work to integrate practices into the flow of their daily operations. The goal is to shift how we do our work in order to mitigate the challenges, and maximize the inherent rewards, of helping others.

Diana has worked in the teaching and health care sector for over 30 years specializing in trauma-focused work. Over the course of her career she has worked in emergency department crisis teams, coordinated hospital based sexual assault/domestic violence treatment programs, which involved assisting individuals experiencing a current crisis, counselling those who have been traumatized by violence, and teaching a variety of other professionals how to do this work effectively while staying healthy themselves.

She also regularly provides training to various health, legal/judicial and community professionals and has worked with TEND Academy in this capacity for over 10 years.
